Chestnut is cultivated as an economic crop in the world. They are mainly distributed in China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and North and South America. They are mainly Japanese chestnut, European chestnut, American chestnut. Among Chinese chestnut varieties, there are wild chestnut, wild chestnut, and castanea henryi.
1. Japanese chestnut
The main producing areas of Japanese chestnut are Japan and North Korea. The branches and leaves are slightly red, the leaves are long and narrow, yellow-green. Chestnut bracts are thin and long, with thick skin and poor toughness, making it difficult to peel off. Chestnuts bear fruit early and are adapted to coastal, warmer and humid climates. Dandong chestnut in Liaoning Province of my country is a kind of Japanese chestnut with better quality and more cold tolerance; Korean chestnut distributed on the Korean Peninsula is a variant of Japanese chestnut; Wendeng chestnut in Shandong Province of my country belongs to Korean chestnut, which is more suitable for coastal environment. But the quality and cold tolerance are not as good as Dandong Li. The grafting affinity between Japanese chestnut and Chinese chestnut is generally poor.
2. European chestnut
European chestnuts are native to Southern Europe and West Asia, and are naturally distributed in Italy, France, Spain, Yugoslavia, Turkey and the Caucasus. The tree is tall, with thorns and nuts similar to Japanese chestnuts, and the astringent skin is not easy to peel off. It is suitable for the Mediterranean climate, has poor resistance to chestnut blight and ink disease, and is not suitable for cultivation in warm and humid areas.
3. American chestnut
American chestnuts are native to North America, large trees, small nuts and small chestnuts.
4. Mao Li
Mao Li is native to my country and is distributed in the mountains and hills south of the Qinling Mountains, Dabie Mountains, Lu Mountain and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The northern limit of its distribution is wider than that of Castanea henryi. Small tree, shaped like wild chestnut, but with smaller leaves, involucres, and nuts, with scaly glandular dots on the back of the leaves, thin involucres, and relatively slender spines. Nuts weigh 0.7 to 1 grams. Mao Li is not compatible with chestnut grafting and cannot be used as a rootstock for chestnut.
5. Castanea henryi
Castanea henryi is native to my country and is distributed with the Huaihe River as the northern boundary. It is cultivated economically in the mountains and hills above 500 meters above sea level, from southern Zhejiang to northern Fujian. The tall arbor, the main stem is straight, and it is used as a material. There is only 1 nut in the involucre. Cooked food is more fragrant than chestnut. The new shoots are glabrous, the leaves are thin, the back of the leaves is smooth, oblong-ovate or lanceolate, and the apex is long and pointed.
6. Wild chestnut
Chestnut wholesale Wild chestnut is native to my country, mainly distributed in Qinling, Funiu and Dabie Mountains, and its distribution is limited to the Qinling Mountains and Huaihe River in the north. Shrubs and small trees have stellate hairs on the back of the leaves, but the leaves are smaller than chestnuts, and the fruit is smaller. The weight of nuts generally does not exceed 3 grams, but the female flowers are easy to form, and the involucres often form clusters. It may be the original species of cultivated chestnut, the closest relative. Serving as a rootstock.
